Fast Facts
- CHARTS (Connecting Health and Records Technology Systems) is a pilot project by the Central Florida RHIO to create a central database of critical medical records for access at regional hospitals.
- Potential reach is an estimated 1.8 million people in the metro Orlando area.
- 11 emergency departments in the Orlando Health and Florida Hospital systems and Shepherd’s Hope are among the pilot program participants. (Updated April 8, 2011)
- CHARTS allows patients’ hospital charts – lab results, test reports, doctors’ notes, prescriptions and procedure notes – to be stored together electronically for authorized access at local hospitals.
- As of April 8, 2011, more than 800,000 patients have agreed to participate in the electronic records system, with dozens more signing up each day.
- Participation in CHARTS requires a patient to sign a consent and medical information release form. The patient is then entered into the system, which builds one comprehensive, unique record per person for easy access and tracking.
- The CHARTS system is privacy-protected and follows all HIPAA regulations to protect patient information.
- CHARTS is a program by Central Florida RHIO, which represents Brevard, Lake, Osceola, Orange, Polk, Seminole and Volusia counties.
- Central Florida RHIO, a 501(c)(3) began in 2006 with more than $1 million in state grants and funding from local hospital foundations, business coalitions, pharmaceutical companies and health insurers.
